The UK’s love for wanderlust continues to flourish with nearly nine out of ten travellers taking a holiday this year, the highest for eight years.
A report from the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) found that 88% of UK travellers went on holiday up to the period of July 2019. This has increased from 60% in 2018 – this increase has largely been influenced by families with children aged five or above who took an average of 5.6 holidays both in the UK and internationally during this period.
Why package holidays are spearheading an increase in holidays
Package holidays to popular destinations such as Spain, the Canaries, Greece and the Balearics has helped spearhead this growth with Abta citing that a package holiday offers ‘a great range of excellent value holidays and destinations.
There has been double-digit growth in UK consumers buying package holidays to destinations like Bulgaria, Turkey and Egypt. Elsewhere, the report outlines that North America, Italy and France remain top choices for UK travellers.
Travel is 'still a priority'
It seems that travel is still a ‘spending priority’ for UK travellers – with seven out of ten people planning an international trip within the next 12 months, with Europe top of their travel bucket list.
Mark Tanzer, chief executive of Abta said:
“The British public’s appetite for taking holidays has continued unabated in the past 12 months.
This has partly been due to the wide variety of excellent value for money options available this year, and because holidays are a priority when it comes to discretionary spend.
Rather than cutting back on the number of holidays, people are looking to save money in their holiday budget in other ways – spending less before and while they’re away and changing when they book to find better deals.”
