From 12 October 2025, EU Biometric Checks Begin
Starting 12 October 2025, all non-EU travellers—including Brits—crossing into Schengen countries by plane, train or ferry will need to register their fingerprints and have their photo taken at the border. This new Entry-Exit System (EES) replaces passport stamping with digital records that store your biometric data for three years.
It applies across all Schengen countries, plus Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting.
The rollout is phased, so not all borders will have mandatory checks straight away, but full enforcement is expected by April 2026.
What Does This Mean for You?
You’ll need a valid biometric passport, extra time at border control for registration, and to stay informed as airlines and border points update their processes.
What’s coming next
ETIAS, the EU’s new online travel authorisation, is expected in late 2026. It will cost around £17 per adult and be valid for three years.
