River Cruise Reflections – First Time on the River

Danielle Dry, Business Development Manager at Not Just Travel, recently had the pleasure of trying her first river cruise onboard Riviera.

As someone who’s spent years sailing the oceans, I didn't know what to expect from my first river cruise.

But wow — it completely exceeded my expectations.

Two moments truly stood out.

The first was sailing up the Seine at night, watching the Eiffel Tower sparkle with a glass of Champagne in hand — a total pinch-me moment I'll never forget.

The second was visiting Monet’s Gardens in Giverny. Bursting with colour and history, they were even more magical in person. Standing by the famous lily pond felt like stepping straight into a scene from Emily in Paris.

What surprised me most was how sociable and personal the experience felt. With around 120 guests onboard, it was easy to get to know people — it felt more like a boutique floating hotel than a cruise ship. The crew were exceptional, creating such a relaxed, “home from home” atmosphere that by day two, everyone was greeting each other by name.

I also thought having just one restaurant and brasserie might mean less choice — but that wasn't the case! The menus were varied, seasonal and beautifully presented. Every meal felt like dining in a top gourmet restaurant, with service and attention to detail that rivalled any five-star resort.

And the value for money? Outstanding. Aside from the odd souvenir or tip, everything was included — from guided excursions and wine with dinner to the wonderful service.

Why a River Cruise Feels So Special

On a river cruise, the scenery never stops moving, yet the pace feels perfectly still. You wake up each morning to a new view right outside your window — medieval towns, chalk cliffs, apple orchards — all gliding by as breakfast is served.

There are no crowds, no endless queues, and no “sea days.” Instead, you dock in the heart of each destination and step straight into the story — cafés, cathedrals, and cobblestones waiting just beyond the gangway.

It’s immersive, peaceful, and surprisingly luxurious — the perfect blend of exploration and ease.

Highlights

Paris & The Seine

Boarding near the city’s edge, the calm rhythm of the river instantly replaced city bustle. Evening cruising back into Paris as the lights twinkled? Pure magic.

Château Gaillard & Normandy’s Cider Farm

Learning how Norman apples become cider, tasting rillettes straight from a farmhouse kitchen, and sailing past storybook villages — bliss.

Rouen

Medieval markets, Gothic spires, and an onboard tarte Tatin demo inspired by Monet’s Rouen paintings — an absolute dream for food lovers.

Honfleur & Giverny

Pastel-coloured harbours, crêpes in centuries-old cafés, and Monet’s gardens in bloom — moments that felt made for a travel journal.

River Cruise vs Ocean Cruise

Having experienced both, I can say this: river cruising is the 'thinking' traveller’s choice.

  • Intimate and personal – Smaller ships mean genuine connections with crew and guests.
  • Pack once, explore daily – Your cabin travels with you. No unpacking, no hassle.
  • Dock in the heart of towns – Step ashore and explore instantly.
  • Scenery that never stops – Every bend of the river offers something new.
  • Dining that reflects the destination – From Norman cider to Parisian pastries, the cuisine tells a story.
